Catcher- Holden and Phoebe's relationship

One relationship that was very important to Holden was with his sister Phoebe. Holden bought a record for her, but he broke it. He was very upset when it broke because he could not give the gift to Phoebe when he saw her. Besides Jane, Phoebe was one of the people he always thought about calling. The only reason Holden went home was to visit Phoebe. Phoebe had very important conversations with Holden. She made him realize that he does not like a lot of things. He admitted to Phoebe that he wants to be a "catcher in the rye" to save little kids from falling off of a cliff in a rye field. I think this means that he wants everyone to have a good childhood, and therefore a good life. Anyone who veers off and needs help could be saved by Holden. I think this is based off of Allie's death. Holden loved his brother and his family when he was young, but everything changed after his brother died. Holden would go back into the future and change his attitudes in the past if he could. He doesn't want to be depressed, but he gets depressed by thinking of anything. 

Near the end, Holden told Phoebe to meet him at the museum to say goodbye. She asked him where he was going, and she made a big deal of going with him when she brought her suitcase. Holden lost his patience with her and ended up staying. They went to the zoo, and Phoebe did not walk with him because she was mad and giving Holden the silent treatment. Holden gave Phoebe her space and let her cross the street and walk by herself on the opposite sidewalk because he knew she would follow him. Phoebe soon got over her grudge, like kids do, and actually had fun when she went on the ride. Holden was extremely happy when he watched Phoebe having fun, and this was the most joyful he was in the entire book. 

Catcher in the Rye 2

I finally finished the Catcher in the Rye. More events occurred in the second half, and these were even more depressing. There are two events that stick out in my head and that I want to write about. One event is when Holden was talking to his sister, Phoebe. It was when he snuck home at night and woke her up. Phoebe told him that he doesn't like anything, and she asked him to name someone or something he liked besides talking to her. Holden didn't have an answer, but he thought about a kid named James Castle at Elkton Hills. He called someone conceited, and the guy came after him so James jumped out of a window. I found this extremely random and very, very sad (and disgusting how Holden described him on the sidewalk). 

The other event that sticks out in my mind is when Holden went to his teacher named Mr. Antolini. He told Holden that an education is important because he can find where his mind fits best. One thing that I did not understand was when Holden fell asleep and then woke up because Mr. Antolini was petting his head. Holden took this offensively and then left. I was not sure if it was supposed to be offensive, or if Mr. Antolini was just checking on him. Anyway, the ending events occurred after this, and the ending left me wanting to read more. Holden was finally happy in the end, and I actually wanted to know what else happened to him. 

first half of The Catcher in the Rye

I really enjoy reading The Catcher in the Rye, and I enjoy reading the conversations between the characters. I enjoy trying to predict what will happen next, and what decisions will be made next. The main character always seems to make decisions based on his feelings, and he feels ashamed to tell his family that he got kicked out of another school. I enjoyed reading the part when he was thinking about calling his sister, and I really wanted him to. He seems to have a strong bond with his sister, and I wanted to know what her reaction would be if he told her that he was in New York and was kicked out of his last school. At first, I did not know that his sister was younger than him, but then I understood when he explained more and reminisced about past events with her and their brothers. It is very emotional when he describes his brother that died. It seems that the main character really loves his family, but he does not want to disappoint them. He also feels that he does not fit in with his family because his siblings are smart and personable while he fails school. 

I do not like how depressed and sorrowful the main character is. I don't understand how people don't make the best of bad situations. It frustrated me when he described how he was failing school. This made me wonder why he didn't care about school and why he didn't try to get good grades.
